Building a Witchy Capsule Wardrobe: Dresses

A little goth, a little bohemian, a little mystical – a witchy wardrobe can be a fun and spooky style to wear year-round, not just in October. With a combination of flowy chiffons, lustrous velvets, chunky knits, tough leathers, delicate silks, and intricate lace fabrics, a modern witchy look is made all the more impactful due to its layers and textures. Due to the success of last year’s article on building a witchy capsule wardrobe, I’ll be further expanding that entry with additional posts featuring more of my favorite wardrobe-worthy Amazon finds. Here, I’ll share my picks for best dresses to add to this style.

A witchy wardrobe relies on drama that’s created through interesting details and voluminous silhouettes. Look for dresses like the ones pictured above, that feature tiered ruffles, dramatic cape-like sleeves, and off the shoulder styling.

One of my favorite Amazon finds is this 2-piece asymmetrical lace maxi dress. This dress is chock full of great details: a flowy layered skirt, a backless and sleeveless design, all done in a beautiful lace fabric. Plus it’s available in 8 colors, from quintessential witchy shades like black and gray, to more atypical options like mint green and hot pink.

A basic black maxi dress can be a witchy wardrobe’s best friend, providing countless outfit opportunities. Accessorize it with jewelry, jackets, and belts to have a whole new look every day. And no witchy closet is ever really complete without some black lace. Sheer styles with deep v-necks and split hems provide sexy alternatives to a more basic cut.

Nobody ever said that a witchy wardrobe can only be dark! (Just ask witchy style icon Stevie Nicks.) Shades of white and cream will work into your closet with ease. Casual, beachy styles like a bohemian tassel-adorned maxi are perfect for running errands, while more structured, dressy designs will take you into night effortlessly.

Purple and burgundy are excellent additions to any witchy wardrobe. Bring the drama with big bell sleeves, Renaissance-inspired vintage cuts, and modern hoodie minis.

While lace is a core component of the witchy look, don’t stop there! Crushed velvet, fringe, and mesh will incorporate into your closet without issue.

And don’t forget the prints! Fabrics decorated with constellations, stars, moons, and suns are the perfect addition to any witchy wardrobe.

Mossy greens and jewel toned teals are excellent colors to mix into your closet. And a modern witchy wardrobe still looks to the past for inspiration, so vintage-inspired details like embroidery and ruffles are key elements to the look.

And finally, look to vegan leather, puff sleeves, and smocked details to complete your witchy capsule wardrobe. Fill your closet with pieces you love, and your wardrobe will officially be a certified witchy one.
