PORTISHEAD PLAYLIST

Inspired by a rich tapestry of influences, including Billie Holiday, Public Enemy, Burt Bacharach, and spy and spaghetti western scores from John Barry and Ennio Morricone, Portishead's groundbreaking style sounds like the long-lost soundtrack to the coolest Bond film you've never seen. By utilizing hip hop-swiped record samples and scratches, jazz-inspired vocals, and electronic elements, Portishead was at the forefront of trip hop's development in the 1990s. To get the vintage sound present on their debut album Dummy, the band recorded their music onto vinyl, distressed the records by walking across them, then recorded those results through a broken amplifier. The unconventional process this trio employed produced multiple masterpieces.
